You follow people because of this

Hey Reader!

So much has happened since my last email - both good and bad:

  • I'm FINALLY moving into my new apartment! 🥳️ I'll be sharing pics on LinkedIn
  • One of my best friends got married yesterday! 💒 She asked me to read a poem (I'll share it at the end)
  • I spoke with two writers I've admired for years!✌️ Both Michael Thompson and Sinem Günel will leading workshops in The Committed Writers Club (fingers crossed!)
  • The Committed Writers Club had its first group call ✍️ Members seem to love the format! We've got our second call today.
  • I asked one of the bridesmaids out on a date during the wedding ceremony - and she said yes! 🤗 It's the first time I've thought about dating since my breakup six months ago. I'm taking baby steps. I still think about my ex.
  • My friend Tina has launched an accountability WhatsApp group 🎯 I've loved sharing goals and ideas with talented creators
  • One of my best friend's mum has been diagnosed with cancer for the third time 😔 She got the unfortunate news last week. In the same month, this woman's mum died and she had spinal surgery. What can I say? Some people get knockback after knockback. She's a strong woman with an incredible family, though. I have every confidence she'll beat cancer again.

Why am I telling you this?

Something I've been thinking about is why do I follow the people I follow?

Is it for their helpful tips about writing, marketing, entrepreneurship, etc?

Partly.

But then there's the TikTok dancer I discovered 5 years ago. I still follow her on Instagram. The same goes for a #vanlife YouTuber who travels around America.

Dancing and living in a van are two things I only have a vague interest in.

So why do I keep following these people?

What I've come to realise is it's because they're interesting!

They do cool sh*t.

They're human.

And it's this "do cool sh*t in a human way" whilst being thoughtful about the type of content they post that's so compelling.

That's why I'm sharing these updates. I encourage you to do the same.

I, for one, would love to know what's going on in your life.

So that's my message to you today:

Do more cool sh*t and share it with the world.

We want to hear it.

As always, thanks so much for reading, and have a wonderful weekend! :)

Scott

p.s. I received lots of positive messages about the voice letters, so I'll be doing another soon! But I feel a little rough after yesterday's wedding, and I didn't want to subject your ears to my croaking 😆

Read time: 1 min Hey Reader, Testimonials can help you land new clients, but there's a problem: Anyone can write them. The exception to this are testimonials on LinkedIn. They're verified. The question is how can you ask for these in a way that doesn't feel sleazy? A quick story A few months ago, I started working with Kit. It's been a joy. They're a great client. So much so, I wrote a LinkedIn post about how I landed the opportunity: At the end of the post, I thanked Thom — the person I work...

Hey Reader, I'm sorry I ghosted you. Lots of stuff has happened, so I took a break from being online. But I didn't tell you the full story. So here it is: My mum was with her partner, Rich, for 20 years. He was a wonderful man, and I considered him my dad. But a call from my mum soon changed that. "We've got some bad news, I'm afraid. Rich has been diagnosed with lung cancer. And he has brain tumours." It felt like déjà vu. My mum was diagnosed with ovarian cancer 18 months ago. (She's all...

Read time: 3 mins 📢 Spoiler alert: I have an important update at the end of this email... Hey Reader, I'll be honest; I'm not sure about the freelancing course I put out last week. It was an experiment. I wanted to see: What the unsubscribe rate would be How it would feel to put it out there Whether anyone would book a call It's a mixed bag on all these things, and I felt a little dirty putting the course out there. Why? I copied the style from another creator and it didn't really vibe with...
