This was TOTALLY unexpected

Hey Reader,

Last Saturday, I did my first live commentary for Harrogate Railway's YouTube channel!

Here's the replay.

But this isn't what I want to talk to you about today.

Not really.

No, the unexpected thing happened because of a 51-second video...

Making the video

I wanted to make a "day in the life" voice over video.

So throughout the day, I took the following shots:

  • Researching on my laptop
  • Writing notes
  • Leaving my house
  • Walking to the stadium
  • Going through the turnstile
  • Commentating on the match

Etc etc.

On Sunday morning, I opened CapCut — an app that lets you edit videos from your phone.

I spliced the clips together, recorded my voice over, and added captions.

I then pulled in the commentary audio from the YouTube video.

(Easier said than done!)

Once made, I sent the video to a few close friends. I wanted their feedback.

They liked it.

My video was ready...

The forgotten platform

I've barely touched X in the last 3 years.

But Railway's social media volunteer prompted me to check it out.

I copied the text she used in one of her recent posts (which tagged local newspapers) and posted the video.

The response blew me away!

The post has 4.2K views, 3 reposts, and 31 likes from people I've never met before:

The comments have been super supportive too.

(There's me thinking I was gonna get trolled!)

And if this wasn't enough, I've now got a bunch of first-team players following me.

I feel like a (very minor) celebrity 😅

Sometimes old is best

There are SO many platforms to choose from:

Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, Twitter/X, Substack, Medium, Snapchat, YouTube, Reddit, Pinterest, Discord, Threads, Twitch, Masterdon, Bluesky, Telegram...

(I've probably missed one.)

Those highlighted bold?

They've been around for ~20 YEARS.

Which reminds me of the Lindy effect:

"The longer a period something has survived to exist or be used in the present, the longer its remaining life expectancy"

To put it another way?

Because Twitter has been around for ~20 years, there's a good chance it'll be around for another 20 years.

So I'll focus on this platform and see where it takes me.

Takeaways?

If video content feels hard for you, start with voice overs.

You don't have to talk to a camera.

You don't have to show your face.

And you can re-record your voice over as many times as you like.

Post where your target audience is hanging out.

I posted the same video on LinkedIn.

The result?

Crickets.

Football enthusiasts seem to hang out on X, so that's where I'll post.

Collaborate

I have a mutually beneficial relationship with Harrogate Railway:

They're helping me put the reps in as a football commentator.

And I'm helping them with marketing and social media.

Win-win.

Most important of all?

Just start.

My only regret with football commentary is I didn't start 10 years ago.

But at least I won't have this same regret in 10 years time.

Alright, that'll do for today.

As always, thanks so much for reading, and have a wonderful weekend! :)

Scott

Hey Reader, 4 years ago, I started building this email list. And honestly? It's one of the best things I've ever done. Writing online has helped me connect with people all over the world, work from anywhere, and build long-lasting friendships. I'm extremely grateful to those who've stuck around. You know who you are. But my life is changing. And so too are my priorities. For the longest time, I felt like I had something to prove. (F*ck knows who to.) Writing. Travelling. Business-ing. It was...

Read time: 1 min Hey Reader, I've been sat here for the last 20 minutes thinking about what to write. I take that as a good sign. You see, writing online has been therapy for me. I've shared all of life's ugly details with you. But right now, I feel a sense of peace I haven't experienced in a while. Things are good. So much so, I've ditched my original plans for this email. Instead, I thought I'd share 7 things I'm grateful for. Maybe it'll encourage you to do the same. 5 minutes is all you...

Hey Reader, Since the start of Feb, I've been trying to figure something out: How can I best serve you? You see, people on my email list have different interests: Outsourcing Freelancing Writing And on it goes. But what's the thing you've got in common? You probably stick around for me. *I just felt some sick in my mouth* 😅 All my favourite creators keep it real. Take Alice Lemee. We've never met in person, but I feel like we're internet friends because of her posts. (She's well worth a...
